Chicago Fun!! Need your feedback ASAP.

Hello Ladies:

Joe here. Richard is reviewing your materials. Do we have some procrastinators among you!!??

So great to hear about such terrific memories from the Palmer House Hilton Hotel! Looks like we picked the right spot. All I can say right now, Ladies, is keep Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings open for some terrific fun. And rest up because you are going to need it!

What we are trying to do is plan some events at or close to the Palmer House Hilton Hotel (call 1-877-865-5321 for reservations and ask for the Senior Bachelor rate) Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. This gives you, Richard and your new friends more time to socialize and spend time together. With the exception of Friday evening, which I'll go into more detail below, these events should end around 9:00PM. Then you all can go discover the other great nightlife that Chicago has to offer (me, I'll probably head off for bed- LOL!)

We talked about the Chicago River Cruise. Well, this can be the actual first "Senior Bachelor Cruise!" Here is what I have been able to work out for the Chicago River Dinner Cruise for Friday evening, September 30. Check out this boat- it's called the Odyssey!

Here is what is included (from their website):

"Odyssey is the perfect venue for an unforgettable special occasion! Enjoy a three-hour escape to the elegant entertainment experience that only a true luxury vessel can provide. Dine on creative appetizers, sumptuous entrees and delicious desserts prepared fresh onboard daily. Add an award winning wine from our comprehensive wine list. Dance to live music...or simply watch the unmatched skyline views drift past your table. Board: 7:00pm (from the Navy Pier) Cruise: 8:00pm - 11:00pm. Your ticket price includes your cruise, the view, your dining experience and our entertainment. Coffee, tea and iced tea are complimentary. Beer, wine and liquor may be purchased separately from your service team.$87.00 per person (Price does not include taxes, fees, and an 18% prepaid service charge)."

They will give us our own deck with a live jazz trio. Their regular price including all taxes, fees, gratuity, etc. is $115.71. They are willing to offer the Senior Bachelor group a TOTAL price of $80.00 which includes everything- tax, fees, and gratuity. That's a savings of 30% or $35.00. This sounds like a really fun time at a terrific price. The Head Concierge at the Palmer House Hotel highly recommeded it. Dinner alone at almost any restaurant in Chicago could almost cost that much. Get more information at http://www.odyssey.com/.

Now, for budgeting purposes, Thursday evening will most likely be dinner together with separate checks near the hotel with some free entertainment back at the hotel that evening. For Saturday evening, it might be a buffet dinner and no-host cocktail party with fun (free) events planned in our ballroom.

Please let us know what you think about the Cruise idea right away. Normally, with large groups they want the group leader to sign a contract and collect the money from individuals, etc. We really don't have the ability to do this so they have agreed to let you call a special number and use your credit card to pay for the cruise and dinner.

Thanks.

Hi Joe,...............The cruise you are talking about is the one I had mentioned previously when things hadn;t been confirmed. You can also go on that same ship for cocktails only. They have a cocktail/bar on board, and what is really nice is that it is open of course and you go upstairs and see all the sights as it cruises along. I see it each time it is out on a run because it's turn around point is where my apt. overlooks Lake Michigan.
I have been on it several times for fund raisers, and dinners, also a wedding reception. So if dinner for everyone doesn't work you can do the cocktail criuse. Also where you board is quite nice because it is at Navy Pier and there's many things to see and do there, resturant's included.
Anyway just trying to help since I've had the pleasure of experiencing the"Odessy"

My offer still stands for airport pick-up if anyone's interested.

Ladies,

I think the bottle of wine is extra as their site says: "Beer, wine and liquor may be purchased separately." The marketing blurb was just saying you can "add" a bottle of wine, etc.

Glad you like the idea and thanks for the feedback. I'll be getting the final details from them soon. It sounds like a terrific value and, when I call on the Senior Bachelor group's behalf, they all get excited about it! You Ladies are creating quite a commotion! One of my favorite movie lines is "I think we need a bigger boat." (or something close to that) Where is that from?

I've read Linda's instrucions and still haven't even attempted it. I had an assistant (my daughter) that worked for me in real estate and did all the computer work. I think she was on Dynasty to or something like that. I appreciate any and all compliments and one should never get too many. I was wondering if the Cruise is cocktail attire, or formal or as they say now casual chic? Which can mean very expensive jeans and anything that sparkles,or flows on top. : )

CHICAGO GALS - This is how you get some really quality time with Richard - arrive on Thur. go to dinner with him, he's intelligent, great since of humor and just plain delightful. He makes everyone feel so welcome. There were 13 of us and we had him all to ourselves for a good 3 hours. This gives him a chance to put a name with a face. OK next he'll have a 2 hour meeting in the morning and that's a must because he tells funny stories about himself and the movie industry(Oprah show). He's always open to any questions you might have so lay it on him. Than when it gets to be your turn for a meeting with him, he has a name with a face & you already know him and that makes it more fun.

Wow, Ladies, you are a well traveled group! Thanks for the comments on the Odyssey (I found the lovely irony in the name, too.) More details tomorrow on that.

"Anon": good catch on the line being from "Jaws". I checked- Lake Michigan is fresh water-- no great whites.

"Cathyincarolina"- did I miss something or did you tape the video you are sending to Richard in that room? If so, I'll be peeking over his shoulder! There was a woman who came to the Manhattan Beach cocktail party who was a celebrity look a like of Sophia Loren. I mean, I had to look twice to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Now, if you could arrange a Marilyn look a like for Chicago. LOL! By the way, did anyone at MB take a photo of "Sophia". Could you send me a copy if electronic? "Ada", I think the Madonna Inn is back in shape. Can anyone in central California report on that. They have one heck of a "pink" coffee shop. Like sitting in a big cloud of cotton candy.

"CB" great to have you back safe and sound. Isn't Chicago on your way back home from Vancouver? C'mon, you can make it!

"Karla" please try to update us from Tuscany. I'm planning a trip there when school is out next June for my family and another. I want to get the kids (ages 13 and 14) on bikes going through those gorgeous hills! Lots of internet cafes in Italy-- stay in touch and safe travels.

"redtbird" thanks for the testimonial on the Manhattan Beach shindig. Shhhhh, the early arrivals event is supposed to be a surprise. Actually we are going to need to see a show of hands soon (not now) of who might be arriving early on Thursday, September 29th. Got something brewing for y'all and for you locals that might want to drop by.

Hey, who can give us some movies or TV shows that were made in or about Chicago? I'll start with the movie "The Fugitive".

Later.

It was great (would have been better with a partner). They provided the bikes to fit you by making arrangements ahead of time(asking height/wt). The 2 guides provided route maps & were there for SAG support. ie.< Unbeknownst to me, they noticed I had a flat and fixed it while I had lunch! The hotel/villas and most of the food, sight seeing to winery, crystal engraving, churches, shopping. It's one of the best trips I've had. It's a great way to liveSTRONG. I'll bring a brochure to Chicago, How about a SeniorBachelor trip cycling through the sunflower fields and vineyard admiring the architecture, not to mention the sunsets...thanks, Erika

Hello Ada;
The Madonna Inn is thriving and a very popular tourist attraction in our area.

Hello there Joe;
You asked for names of movies or TV shows filmed in or about Chicago so here's mine:
Home Alone
Somewhere In Time
1941
When Harry met Sally
Sleepless In Seattle

You also asked for comments from anyone on the Central Coast about the Madonna Inn, I think I'm the only blogger from this area so here's a little info for all of you.

The Madonna Inn was established in 1958 by Alex and Phyllis Madonna with only 12 rooms. They chose a perfect location midway between LA and SF. The biggest tourist draw is the waterfall urinal in the men's restroom and yes, ladies, we can go in to have a look...although it is customary to give the complimentary hollar before you go in to see if the coast is clear.
Sadly, Alex Madonna passed away in 2004 at the age of 85.
To see pics of this area, go to www.madonnainn.com and click on 'while your here'.

Linda in Tucson, Glad to hear you're checking ID's, keep up the good work:)

PS: I want to go to Chicago :(
Gotta go again, have another date...

Hey there bikingnut,............
be careful, you might get a gander at our bike trails and not want to leave. Should you want to check them out let me know, I'll let ya use mine.
You can bike the whole lake front, north to south, and then go into the ones in the forest preserves and up to the Botanical gardens. Fantastic stuff.

As for the attire on the cruise, yes dressy casual is fine. You'll probably find all modes of dress since people are there for different occasins and reasons. Do remember to bring a sweater or jacket though. It can be breezy at night here, 'THE WINDY CITY"
Anybody know how we got that monicer, or what Chicago means?

I would love to be rooming with you gal's but realistically, I'm 10 minutes away from where all this is , sooooo I will be attending all the fun , staying to enjoy . I'll just go home at the end of the evenings and return in the AM .
I'LL BE TAKING "STARBUCKS ORDERS ANYONE, :D :D "

Also, I can keep you posted on last minute weather. Even though you might look up on-line forecast's our weather can change in a moments notice. Give yourself the options of clothing that has temperature flexability.

"Nancy in Ohio" I'll be getting the telephone number for the cruise probably tomorrow (Friday). Hold tight! Look at their website and call for questions but no one there will know about the special Senior Bachelor rate until we finalize things.

Still looking for any photo of the Sophia Loren look alike lady who came to MB. Grazie!

And, "Linda in Tucson"- Congratulations, yes, you win the big prize for being first with the movie trivia. I took a picture of the prize and posted it on my Blog. Just click the "Joeinmb" link above and then click on my "Helping the Senior Bachelor" post to see it. Way to go!!

I am from Texas also, and apparently there are not many of us. Maybe there is a "senior bachelor" right here in our own state just waiting to be found! Sounds like you are in the southern part of Texas? I am in the northern part-Dallas. Are you going to chicago? If so, have a great time-MB sounded like a wonderful weekend. I have not seen you "blogging" lately-then again, I rarely write anything either. To the rest of you, your pictures and comments are humerous, inspiring, and I am living vicariously through all of your extensive travels and experiences!!

Good evening Roe & Joe and Ladies...Count me in for The Odyssey, this holds special intrique for me.

Let me tell you why (this is a true story).

My daughter had just moved to Chicago for an unbelieveble job; tho she had never intended to move to Chicago, this was just one of those flukes. She felt destined to be in Chicago, but had no idea why.

Then on News Year's Eve she was invited to a party (guess where??) You got it, on the Odyssey!!! Who did she meet????
RICHARD!!! Now this Richard is from England, so they spend a few days together, and he is back in his homeland. They keep in touch and visit back and forth and eventually they spend several months together to see if they are truly soul mates.

Does this theme sound familiar?

Now, if this same story would only play out once again, only this time for MOM :D, lol

And just to let you know how the story ended........Yes, we have one awesome Richard already in our family and he is a keeper!

Richard, I'll see you on the Odyssey!!

Hi All –

Looking forward to welcoming all of you to Chicago! And heed Chi-town Girl’s warning: When the wind blows off the lake, it won’t feel like what the thermometer says.

Joe, just to clarify, the Odyssey is a Lake (not a river) cruise. I believe there are some tours on the river, as well. Seeing the skyline from the Lake is really quite lovely, particularly if we start out before it gets dark. Check the time for our sunset (I think it’s around 7:30 right now). There’s no doubt one can get many wonderful meals for less $$, but not with the view. However, the idea of a cocktail cruise might work as well.

Chicago is an “architecture town” and anyone who is interested in architecture will enjoy seeing it. I’ll certainly be happy to ferry some of you gals around the neighborhoods, if you want to get a feel for the city and surrounding areas.

As for movies made in Chicago and its suburbs, include the following:

Risky Business
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Blues Brothers
Sixteen Candles
Barbershop
Ordinary People
Raisin in the Sun

Check the City of Chicago Film Office site for many, many more.

Finally, I’ll be happy to transport someone flying into O’Hare on Thursday around mid-day. I live about 15 minutes north of the airport and could pick you up on my way in.

See you soon!

Carol

Hello all,
Lots of movies are always being made in and around Chicago and being a movie buff I live North of the city where the film crews like working. The most famous movie made in Chicago was definately "The Blues Brothers." About 45 miles North there are more and more directors choosing to use a "highway to nowhere" that we have for a lot of crash scenes and they had one there in the film (if I remember) was "Ordinary People" with Carol Burnett. Another film that was made in and around the Chicago area and is very famous is "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray.
We have a good film that will be coming out during the holidays that they said would be called "Ice Harvest" with John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton. It was fun to watch since it was July and they brought in lots of snow for it since it takes place at Christams. They also decked a whole neighborhood out with Christmas decorations. Watch for it. "My Best Friends" Wedding is another one that was filmed at the Cuneo Estate, not far from where I live, and I had friends that were cast in the background. The list goes on and on but the movie "Chicago" was filmed in Canada.
Willemina......"Somewhere in Time" is my favorite romantic movie and I watched the whole film being made on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel. I was staying there at the time. I have Christopher Reeve's autograph and I knew that the sound tract and costumes would win an Academy Award - and they did! That was 1979.
I can list a whole lot more films made in Chicago and if you are lucky you might run into some famous people that seem to always be in Chicago. A lot of them eat at Gibson's Steak House in Old Town.
Just some more tidbits about Chicago............
Hugs,
Chandra

Carol of Riverwoods,
Ferris Beuhler's Day Off - one of my favorite movies of all time! Risky Business was another one made here - thanks Carol.
Linda - Bob Fosse's original play, Chicago, (of which the movie was taken from) was made in 1975 and that was from here. But the movie Chicago was made in Toronto as strange as that seems. Loved it.
..........don't get me going on movies.......I have a whole collection of the old time movie star greats who personally autographed their photos for me when I was a wee tadpole.

Chicago comes from the Indian word Chickaugong (tribe unknown)

Definition of Chicago: strong; great

Windy City: according to one Editor of the Chicago Tribune, the name had to do with it being a tourist attraction during the summer and the refreshing breezes on the lake, as well as the brisk winds off of Lake Michigan.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know where the nickname "Windy City" came from?
Well, way back when Chicago was trying to promote the Columbian Exposition, to be held in 1893, the politicians constantly boasted about the city because they had done so much after the Chicago fire. People thought that they were full of wind. Plus, it really is windy along the lake so it has two meanings.
Does anyone know when the great Chicago Fire was? Oct. 8, 1871. It is documented in my great-grandfather's diaries of which he had written across one whole page on that date......"Conflagaration in ruins!"
......as Linda Ellerby once said......."and so it goes."
I guess I have had too much time on my hands tonight. The excitment is building......
See you soon.
Hugs,
Chandra

Hi Everybody! And Welcome to all of our new Bloggettes! I've been working a lot this week and have a show to produce tomorrow - so have just been 'skimming' the Blogs ... but will catch back up on Sunday. Loved the Chicago menu items! Making me want to go. : )

Also - just wanted to mention (hope this is okay Richard and Joe) ... for those of you interested in making donations to The Red Cross - you are welcome to participate in the NNBBS Red Heart Bracelet venture - which will donate funds to The American Heart Assoc/World Heart Fed. OR The Red Cross (your choice). You receive a Red Heart Bracelet, like the one that Richard was wearing in one of the photos from MB. This is not an official SB activity - but Richard and Joe have been kind enough to allow us (The NNBB Sisterhood gals) to mention it from time to time. You can find all the details on the new Red Heart Bracelet Blog at:
http://nnbbs.blogspot.com/
or you are welcome to come to my Blog ...
to get more info.

Hey Joe. I signed on to get Nancy's updates ... and she wrote me a nice Email. What a great lady she is. I'm looking forward to more 'Mirthquakes'!! : ) Thanks so much for sharing that with us!! Hope you are doing well.

Well Richard ... tomorrow is ...
'D Day' (Deadline Day). I bet you will be relieved to have a stop to the receiving of the videos ... and to being able to concentrate fully on the selection process. What a task you have undertaken! : ) I hope that it is fun for you ... and that the right ladies will be easy for you to choose ... because they will have reached out and touched you in some way. If we get to vote ... I know of six great gals for you! : ) (ha ha) Seriously ... just wanted you to know that I was wishing you well ... as you go into this part of the process. I didn't submit anything to you ... because it just wasn't the right thing for me to do ... but I am definitely 'in' on the quest for romance and adventure ... and 'The Cruise' ... and watching to see the 'arms and legs' that develop from all of this. And ... I am hoping that I know some of the chosen ones! : ) You Take Care ... and Enjoy the process!

G'Night All! See you in a few!

Warm regards,

Brenda

Hello again ladies, Richard and Joe,

Joe; Now I want to go out and rent 1941 because it's been a while since I last saw it. It's a classic and maybe I'll get a chance to see it this weekend.

Carol;
I checked out the City of Chicago Film Office/lots of great movies listed... wasn't sure if all I had listed were filmed in Chicago and found out that they were, thanks.

Hello Chandra;
Somewhere In Time is also one of my all time favorite movies. How special for you to actually be there during filming and meeting Christopher Reeve! I'd like to mention that I love your picture on the NNBBSH, you look like a lady with class. I love your comments on the blog and so wish that I could meet you, Chi-Town girl and Carol in Chicago. I know that all of the ladies will be in good hands with the three of you there. Isn't it amazing how this blogging can bring complete strangers together? We're all so different but then again so much alike. I'm glad you had too much time on your hands tonight because I have enjoyed learning some trivia about Chicago.

Welcome to some new bloggers I haven't seen before; Ilene in Kansas, Sunrise, linda p.,sherry-wherever i park (now that's an unusual name, maybe you can tell us where that comes from?)

Erika in LA (lake arrowhead);
I have only seen you blogging a few times before, but then you've been off bike riding in Tuscany...not much time for blogging I guess. Have you and biking nut shared stories?

Yvonne in honolulu;
Have a wonderful time in Chicago!

My Kind Of Town

(Writers: Cahn/van Heusen)
(Performer: Frank Sinatra)

Now this could only happen to a guy like me
And only happen in a town like this
And so I say to each of you most gratefully
As I throw each one of you a kiss

This is my kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of people too
People who, smile at you

And each time I roam, Chicago is
Calling me home, Chicago is
One town that won't let you down
It's my kind of town

My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of razzmatazz
And it has, all that jazz

And each time I leave, Chicago is
Tuggin' my sleeve, Chicago is
The Wrigley Building, Chicago is
The Chicago Cubbies, Chicago is
One town that won't let you down
It's my kind of town

goodnight all and sweet dreams

Good Morning Ladies,

What I really like about all the comments and trivia games are the memories it provokes. For example, those are all great movies and hearing about them triggers memories of where we first saw them, who with and what we learned from them. Thanks to all for jumping in!

Same thing with "Ada's" question: "Does anyone know the ditty on how you spell Chicago?" I'm not sure if this is the one you had in mind but my Dad taught us one that went like this: "The chicken's in the car and the can't go and that's how you spell Chicago." Brought up all sorts of memories with the family and long, long road trips!

"Yvonne in honolulu" Great sentiments and I'm sure much appreciated. I look at how far we have all come on this Search and Journey and want to thank you all, too.

Welcome to even more newcomers to the blog: "sunrise", "sherry where ever I park", "linda p", "ilene in Kansas" and more (apologies if I left you out.) I think one of the most fun things in Manhattan Beach was guessing who was who by the Blog names and placing the face with the name. If you've thought of blogging with us and are going to Chicago, post a few comments so everyone can get to know you before you arrive!

More later.

From around the world ...
Some of these are recognizable straight away - in the UK they would say "When the cat's away, the mice will play". The Ugandan equivalent is "When the master is absent, the frogs hop into the house". Others seem to make no sense whatsoever. If anyone can tell me why the pants of today are better than the trousers of tomorrow, I'd love to know.

. Zimbabwe - Whoever ploughs with a team of donkeys must have patience.
. Egypt - The barking of a dog does not disturb the man on a camel.
. Uganda - The hunter in pursuit of an elephant does not stop to throw stones at birds.
. Thailand - Life is so short we must move very slowly.

Ilene-- do not fear blog withdrawal. This whole venture is more than "one man's search for the perfect travel companion". A whole sisterhood has formed and the senior romance movement will keep blogging alive and connections continuing, I have no doubt. I betcha the SeniorBachelor and his SeniorBachelorette will be checking in regularly with their travel stories on this site. BUT many other blog sites are sprouting....(the arms reaching and the legs moving onward). There is WAY too much energy here for this to go away.

Can't wait to hear you all "Chi"me in with your own SB event experiences -- which BTW falls on Oct 1--my 54th b'day! (would someone please stop me with this word-play stuff-- just too much time in my brain)

Best to all!

Hello everyone,
MerryMary:
Ah....."Some Like It Hot" - another favorite movie of mine. It was made in Miami and I was there on vacation when it was released. Among the great films. 1959 I believe. You are among us 50's fun lovers - remember James Dean? He was my heart throb and Rebel Without A Cause started our generation to think about independency. He was killed far too early in his Porsche.
Can't wait to meet you in Chicago and talk real estate....

Hugs,
Chandra

Prelude to a Kiss -- originally an award winning play and that is why it is such a richly textured dialog. It got some Tony awards. I watched the film and loved it Films from plays are often the best.

Joe,
I have gone on some great bicycle trips of Spain and Italy with
www.ExperiencePlus.com. The tour in Tuscany goes from Florence to Pisa. My favourite was cycling from Venice to Florence, through the heart of Italian culture and cuisine. For maximum enjoyment I take along a gel bicycle seat and sunscreen with bug repellant. If your wife goes, I recommend "man repellant", the Italians love blonds.
