    Hello Everyone!

Wow! Ms. Oprah Winfrey reaches a lot of people!! It was just two weeks ago when The Senior Bachelor endeavor was launched on her show, and it has been quite a journey thus far. First and foremost are my most sincere thanks and gratitude to each and every one of you who has participated by sending in videotapes, photographs, biographies, e-mails, and subscribing to this Newsletter. There have been over 1,500,000 "hits" to the new website, 60,000 unique visitors to the site, 4,500 subscribers to the Newsletter, and 2,200 e-mails. I am flabbergasted, flattered and overwhelmed by the response.

There are many things to talk about, but I don't want to make these Newsletters too long, and for the next few weeks I plan to write an average of two a week as I proceed with the Search for the Perfect Traveling Companion for our around-the-world trip. Many of you have referred to The Senior Bachelor as a contest, and I can understand that. However, to me it is a Search and a Journey.

    Getting Personal
    Richard Volleyball

I was surprised at how many people asked about my birthdate, height and weight. I am 6'2", 200 pounds and I play beach volleyball about two hours a day. As far as my birth date, let's just say my sign is Aries- so I recently turned 64. Many people have provided their phone numbers and asked me to call them. I kindly ask for your indulgence and cooperation in this regard as I am still struggling to respond to all of the e-mails, tapes, photos and biographies that have been sent in. The single best way for us to communicate for awhile will be via these Newsletters. This is where all of the updates, changes, news, travel tips, anecdotes, etc. will be forthcoming. If you would like to e-mail me, you can do so at and I'll do my best to get back to you- I promise.

I received 118 great videotapes (including DVD, 8mm, and mini-DV) by Tuesday, May 3! A nationally syndicated television show in Chicago (which I am not permitted to name but a little imagination will go a long way!!) requested I send the videos to them to look at. Every single one was viewed by staff there and returned to me. As of this writing I don't know if and when they will be part of a future show- stay tuned to the Newsletters! Again, my very sincere thanks to each of you who raced to get this done. I now look forward to learning more about you as I watch the videos! I've also received many letters with photographs and biographies. To everyone who has submitted these materials; I will respond to each of you acknowledging receipt as soon as I can. Please note all correspondence should always include your e-mail address. The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2005 and the tentatively planned departure date is November 1, 2005.

    In Your Own Words
    Roe Grandkids

I'd like to share with you some of the wonderful sentiments so many of you have sent in. "I'm 13- don't worry- I'm not applying. I was watching Oprah and saw you and thought my grandmother would be a good candidate for this opportunity. I love my grandmother because she doesn't wear old lady clothes. My grandmother is great and you'd be lucky just to know her." "You need to meet my Mom- SHE's HOT!!!!!" "A friend showed me a video of your appearance on Oprah and I must say that you have some kahonies!!" "I realized that my life does not synchronize with your offer, so I decided to watch this adventure unfold from where I am and signed up instead for your Newsletter."

A very heartwarming theme to your emails is daughters writing about their Mothers. I've read some very touching emails about how a daughter's Mom and Dad used to travel a lot but the father passed away and the Mom just stopped caring about even leaving the house. Also, the Moms are not very computer savvy so the daughters are helping Mom with email and the videos, etc. I'm very grateful The Senior Bachelor Search has provided some entertainment for many of these women. I know how they feel. After my devastating divorce, I wanted to stay holed up and was just feeling miserable. But traveling and meeting new people and experiencing new cultures and opening myself to new things helped me to put it all behind me and learn new things about myself. And speaking of families- so many people mentioned their own families, including grandchildren, they asked me for a picture of my seven grandkids!

    Your Ideas

I also need your advice and ideas with other things that have been expressed in your emails, letters and videos. It seems that it's very difficult for many of you to get away for up to six months. There's the pressure of family commitments, pets, jobs, gardens! and a host of other details. I definitely don't want to close off the Search and Journey to otherwise qualified women because of this. If you have any suggestions, please pass them along. You can email me at

That's it for now. My very best wishes to all of you! I'll be writing to you soon.
