    Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

As I had to quickly vamoose out of South America, I never gave a summary of Brazil and Chile. Quite a few readers have asked questions about those countries, including is it safe for women to travel there. The countries are vastly different, mostly in terms of temperament. Brazilians at birth seem to be doing the samba and one only works the minimum to have more time to party. Brazilians are the most fun loving group of people I have ever encountered. They also have an extra dose of the Latino blood and can be hot-tempered. As you know a large part of the incredible Amazon Jungle is located in Brazil, and that was one of the highlights of all my travels. For the benefit of new readers we stayed at The Ariau Amazon Towers, an superb treetop resort absolutely in the heart of the jungle.

This is the exact same location where Survivor Amazon was filmed. Indeed, Vicki and Umberto and I had the exact same guides! I made the mistake of telling the guides we wanted them to push us all day for the four days we were there, and they did not disappoint!

It was so hot and humid that within 5 minutes you were soaked. Some days we spent all day in the jungle and you literally could not carry enough water.

No problem, as certain liana's (I learned they are the opposite of vines in that they grow from the ground up) have pure drinking water inside them. A few machete chops and you are drinking very tasty, and much needed, water.

Iguassa Falls, located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, would have to be classified as one of the Wonders Of The World, as you will see from the accompanying photos. Truly spectacular. I had a great time in Brazil, and Vicki and Umberto had a lot to do with that as they were excellent traveling companions. As for safety, especially in Rio de Janeiro, you have to be careful. If you stay in the Ipanema section, you should be fine. I recommend 3 days in Rio, 4 days in the Amazon, especially at The Ariau Amazon Towers, and 2-3 days at Iguassu Falls.

If you have the time, Salvador and Buzios are the other fun places to visit. For any information, I used a true Brazil expert, Jill Siegel. I highly recommend Jill and here is how you can contact her at www. southamericanescapes.com

Chile can be summarized as a land of humble, gentle, polite people. Half of the some 15 million people live in Santiago. I loved Santiago, even though it is the place where I heard my bad news. Due to the price of copper and smart government policies, Chile is BOOMING. Banks and new buildings and restaurants abound, and it is super safe.

In the north is the Atacama Desert, and this also should be one of the Wonders Of The World, as you will see from some of Umberto's wonderful photography.

Again, my journey was terrific in large part due to Gael and Umberto, two terrific people. Sadly we did not get to go to Patagonia due to my medical situation, but I do know this is a spectacular place to visit for say 3-4 days, more if you are hiking.

    MEDICAL UPDATE

As I write this, it is Friday morning, February 24, and I am starting to recover from surgery yesterday. Dignity?? Forget it. I am wearing one of those silly hospital gowns that no matter how it is tied, your butt seems to always be sticking out. And as I had an operation "down there" this has become public viewing property to all of the female nurses. And yes, they were all Oprah fans and knew about Senior Bachelor. It almost was like legal flashing. "OK, Mr. Roe, time to see how everything thing looks." Hmmm.

For those of you that have never had the distinct pleasure of wearing a catheter, this, more than the incision, the headaches, loss of any form of dignity, pales in comparison to wearing a catheter. I am certain all of the women reading this are aware of where the catheter is stuck in men. I, incorrectly, assumed (hoped??) that the catheter would be the width, of , say, a piece of vermicelli. Maybe, just maybe, as wide as spaghetti. But no, NO,NO,NO, this catheter was the width of a #4 pencil! With men, anything anything around their "pride and joy" that is not there, shall I say, by design, gives us the heebie jeebies. And I can assure you, a #4 stuck in your #1 is not a pleasant experience!!!

I had hoped to receive some stories similar to Angie's great story about New Orleans in last weeks Newsletter, but alas, none (surprisingly) were forthcoming. Please send some articles!!

Now it is Monday afternoon, February 27, and the doctor just called and told me that there was no evidence that the cancer had spread and that he felt all looked good. Whew!

The Senior Bachelor Journey Going Forward

I still have a few months of work to do re the recovery process and if and when I get the definite "all clear" I will chat with Lori, Vija and Cindee about the possibility of resuming the Journey in one fashion or another. These are decisions I cannot make today under the current circumstances.

Again many thanks for your concern.

    Most sincerely,

    Richard Roe
    Senior Bachelor

Things are heating up with the Alaska Cruises! I do plan to keep my "date" with all of you and host these two incredible Senior Bachelor kick off cruises. We have lots of fun things in store which we will be sharing with you shortly. Let's just say that, even if you have cruised before, you will come back saying you have never been on a cruise like this before!!

I exchanged emails with Shawn, our Personal Cruise Consultant, and she wants me to remind you that these two cruises are in the "peak" of the Alaska cruising season. They are very popular in their own right- much less with the added attraction of having us party-ers on board! So please start checking your travel calendar and, if you think there is a chance you want to go, contact her ASAP. Your deposit goes directly to Holland America Lines and is completely refundable up to 75 days before the cruise. People seem to book the better cabins first so at least call her to check availability.

For information about the Senior Bachelor Cruise, click here! Remember to send me an email at Richard@seniorbachelor.com if you need a cruise cabin mate to save the single supplement. We've already matched up a whole bunch of people and I will be able to help you even while on the Journey. Or you can contact our Personal Cruise Consultant, Shawn, at Shawn@seniorbachelor.com or call 1-800-355-3017 Ext. 4294 Mon- Fri, 9:00AM to 6:00PM, PST.

    PerfectMatch.com- A great Success Story!
    FUN, FIT, FREE and FABULOUS

I love hearing from you about your experiences with PerfectMatch! I share them only with the writer's permission- usually given enthusiastically because they are excited to share their success. Fits nicely with our New Year's Resolution theme:

    From Marti- "Richard,

Want to tell you about my success with Perfect Match. I joined at the same time I started planning my trip to Chicago to meet you. David and I emailed a few times, then started two-hour phone calls each night for a couple of weeks, then met in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan immediately after Chicago (my Chicago "tour" included a leaf-peeking week in UP). Since then we have been almost inseparable - almost four months! Incredible! So, yes, I think Perfect Match works, and I have recommended it to a couple of friends. I had tried eHarmony at my sister's insistence for a month, with no luck, and David had tried three other sites at different times over the last couple of years and actually had met a few women. We both think we got lucky on PerfectMatch!

    Good luck!
